Porter Ranch in Los Angeles began as part of the San Fernando Valley's ranchlands, acquired by the Porter family in the 1870s for farming and horses, and remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s when Shapell Industries started master-planned development, transforming it from rustic acreage into a sprawling suburban community with significant growth in the '90s and 2000s, known for its master-planned communities and celebrity ties. The area was named after Benjamin Porter, who, with his family, acquired large portions of the San Fernando Valley in 1874, using it for wheat farming and ranching. For decades, it was a mix of agricultural land, horse ranches, and undeveloped grasslands, with some areas used for early film shoots. The area was annexed by the City of Los Angeles in 1965, allowing for greater development north of Rinaldi Street.
